ChildServ Citizenship Classes

ChildServ's Citizenship program has helped hundreds of immigrants obtain their U.S. citizenship. Classes are conducted at the Round Lake Public Library and ChildServ's Lake County Family Service Center in Waukegan.

ChildServ offers free citizenship classes every Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. throughout the year. The classes are taught at the Family Service Center in Waukegan and at the Round Lake Area Public Library. There is open enrollment. The classes help students prepare for their citizenship exam. More information is available by contacting ChildServ's Lake County Family Service Center at (847) 263-2200.

Communities Served: Waukegan and Round Lake

Participants Served: 7 active volunteers; 172 adult students

Outcomes:
85 classes, in total, were conducted in FY2009. 79 students became qualified to take the citizenship exam. 73% passed.
Success story:In April 2009, volunteers, ChildServ staff and Round Lake librarians all rejoiced together when a 69-year old man successfully passed the exam on his second try. Between October and April, Jose had attended class 20 times, more than any of the other students. Of the 112 students who have attended the Round Lake program this year, Jose had the best attendance. Not only did he receive help from ChildServ's volunteers, but he was also assisted by the Round Lake Library staff. One volunteer said, "I wish all of you could have been there to see the excitement and happiness in his eyes."
