Success Stories
Traveling the pathway to success from El Salvador to North Chicago:
Beata and her four children lost all they had in an earthquake in El Salvador. After living in a tent for a few months in very unhealthy conditions, she immigrated to the United States to reunite with her husband. Things were okay for the first few months until her husband lost his job, began drinking and abusing drugs. The situation became violent and one day the oldest child called the police out of fear for her mother. The police referred the family to a shelter and to ChildServ.

The staff member helped Beata explore her best options and assisted in locating a subsidized apartment and solicited household furnishings from local churches. The greatest challenge and long lasting benefit was to help her achieve legal permanent residence without the help of her husband. After 12 months, Beata met the US immigration guidelines and received a work permit. This allowed her to obtain a more permanent job with health benefits. After two years, Beata and her minor children received permanent residency. As a bonus, the children are doing very well in school.

Congratulations Angie!
Due to personal problems, Angie had difficulty at the start of her senior year. She was referred to an Interweave coordinator because of more than 10 unexcused absences. Angie's mother was concerned that she would not graduate with her class. In working with Angie the coordinator discovered that she was both intelligent and resourceful. She not only graduated on time but was accepted at the University of Illinois, College of Business where she will study accounting.

Jay's pathway to success
Jay's pathway to success began at ChildServ five years ago when he moved into the group home in Lisle.Since that time he has forged strong relationships with the staff and people from the community and developed into a well rounded young adult.

As a thirteen-year-old Jay was not very confident or socially accepted. He worked very hard to get where he is today. Jay took advantage of the opportunities that ChildServ and the community have offered him and has excelled. He is an active member of a church in Naperville and participates every Sunday and Wednesday. Through the church, Jay was able to build relationships with his peers in the community. Jay also built a strong relationship with a mentor from the community. This mentor has helped him grow in many aspects of life.

For several summers, Jay worked as a teacher's aide for students with developmental problems. Jay enjoyed his work as evidenced by his motivation to get up early every day during the summer. Jay attended Technology Center of DuPage the final year of high school and received a certificate in Culinary Arts.

Jay graduated from high school in June 2005. He is preparing for the transition to an independent living program, where we are confident he will succeed. Jay is enrolled at the College of DuPage for the fall of 2005 and is looking forward to pursuing his degree.

Jay has grown up through the years, both physically and socially while at the group home in Lisle. He has become a confident young man and has become part of the ChildServ family and continues to make us proud.

Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house...
During his 15 years, Frank lived in seven foster care homes. He was in a temporary placement while staff continued to seek a permanent foster home since all of his siblings had found permanent living arrangements. During a visit at a foster home, one of the ChildServ case managers noticed a photograph of Frank on the wall. When the case manager asked the foster parent how she knew Frank, she answered that he is her grandson but that she had lost track of him several years ago. We were able to reunite Frank with his grandmother and they have been visiting. The grandmother wants to provide him with a loving, nurturing home.

Home-Based Early Head Start eases the path to success
Lisa and her 13-month-old daughter, Starr, have benefited greatly from weekly visits from a ChildServ home visitor Starr was born three months prematurely and weighed only 1 pound, 6 ounces at birth.Seeing her now as a toddler is a testament to the skill and experience of the medical services she was referred to. The Early Head Start program provides support to this young mother through information on child development and the opportunity to discuss her parenting in a non-threatening setting with a skilled home visitor. Weekly home visits involve developmentally appropriate activities and conversation about nutrition as well as referral to additional community services.
